Centre, Karnataka explore funding options for Metro projects

A fund crunch has forced the state and Union governments to explore innovative ways of mobilising resources to implement Metro project to link Bengaluru airport and KR Puram Silk Board Metro project.

BENGALURU: A fund crunch has forced the state and Union governments to explore innovative ways of mobilising resources to implement Metro project to link Bengaluru airport and KR Puram Silk Board Metro project.

Union Minister for Statistics and Programme Implementation D V Sadananda Gowda, who reviewed the progress of projects being implemented through Central aid here on Monday said the state and Centre  would implement these projects through cost-sharing.

Considering the huge funds needed for the projects, innovative means of funding, which would include commercial exploitation of land along the routes, liberal floor area ratio for properties along the routes and involving corporate houses is being worked out.

Gowda said Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited has prepared a project report to provide Metro connectivity between Nagavara and Kempegowda International Airport. The 30-km Metro work is being taken up on a priority.

The entire stretch of  the 42.3-km Phase 1 would be open for public by April, said Gowda. “As per schedule, the construction of Phase 2 is scheduled to be completed by 2020 but (BMRCL) officials are confident of completing the work before the deadline,” Gowda said.
