BENGALURU: In an attempt to reduce the number of road accidents, the Transport Department is planning to set up more automated vehicle inspection and certification centres, automated driving tracks and heavy vehicle driving training and research institute across the city.

Speaking to Express on the sidelines of a road safety week event organised by the Transport Department on Monday, C P Narayana Swamy said the state’s first automated vehicle inspection and certification centre at Nelamangala will be opened in a few weeks. “We will set up similar centres in Dharwad and Mysuru,” he said.
It is mandatory for transport vehicles to renew their fitness certificate every year.

The centre is aimed to test road worthiness of transport vehicles after evaluation of various parameters. This is expected to bring more transparency and reduce corruption. “Vehicles will have to undergo check for pollution, braking system, head lights, steering, suspension, electrical system and physical condition through automated centres,” said another transport department official. He said vehicles that don’t pass through the required fitness test will not be permitted to ply.

The Transport Department will also set up automated driving tracks in Electronic City, Mysuru, Hassan and Dharwad. At present, only Jnanabharathi regional transport office has an automated driving track. The smart track will automatically track mistakes made by an applicant during a driving test.
More heavy vehicle driving training and research institutes will be set up in the city. Swamy said they have signed an MoU with Ashok Leyland and  drivers have to get training certificate.
