Seventeen universities in Karnataka involved in corruption: Education minister

Higher Education Minister Basavaraja Rayareddi on Tuesday conceded that prima facie there has been corruption to the tune of Rs 500 crore in the universities.

BENGALURU: Higher Education Minister Basavaraja Rayareddi on Tuesday conceded that corruption exists in most of the universities in the state.
He said about 17 state universities are involved in a lot of corruption. He said that prima facie there has been corruption to the tune of Rs 500 crore in the universities.

The Higher Education Department has constituted a three-member committee headed by the Deputy Commissioner of the districts to conduct detailed inquiry regarding corruption and mismanagement of universities.
“The proposal regarding this was signed by the Chief Minister on Monday and we have started dispatching orders to the DCs concerned,” Rayareddi explained.

“Once the inquiry is completed, the department will release the report on corruption in state universities and action will be taken against the officials involved in,” he said.
The minister agreed that there are universities which have carried out poor quality civil works and added that this needs to be probed.

‘No funding from Union government’
He alleged that the Union government has stopped funding for all the Central government sponsored-projects and the Higher Education Department has decided to approach the World Bank for financial assistance.
