tigress death: Seniors didn’t respond to  repeated calls

The tragic death of a tigress in Nagarhole on Tuesday has raised many questions on the procedure that was followed to tranquilise the big cat.

MYSURU: The tragic death of a tigress in Nagarhole on Tuesday has raised many questions on the procedure that was followed to tranquilise the big cat. The animal was tranquilised twice after it ventured into Gandethur village of HD Kote taluk on Tuesday.

It is said that the staff carrying the sedated animal kept calling the senior officials of the Forest Department but no one responded. Sources said that without orders they could not release the animal.  A staff involved in the operation said that they continued with the operation to catch the animal even after sunset as there were chances of the animal creating more problems for villagers. Also, the villagers would not have allowed the forest staff to leave if the operation was left incomplete, they said. “After it was caught, only one dart was seen on the animal and it seems the first one missed the target.”

Three veterinarians from the Institute of Animal Health and Veterinary Biologicals conducted the post mortem. Initial findings have revealed that the animal died due to excitement.
