Srinivas, a resident of Hiriyur taluk, was a close relative of Basavaraj. He murdered Basavaraj and buried the body at an under-construction building near old Jayalakshmi theatre in Hiriyur. According to police, financial transactions between Basavaraj and Srinivas led to the murder.

Basavaraj, had lent `50 lakh to Srinivas to construct a commercial complex at Hiriyur. Despite several reminders, the money was not repaid. Finally Srinivas called Basavaraj to come to Hiriyur to collect some of the money. Basavaraj arrived at Hiriyur on November 8.

An altercation ensued between the two at the building, after which Srinivas hit Basavaraj with a cement block killing him on the spot. Later, Srinivas told his brother-in-law Jayaram about the incident. Srinivas and Jayaram buried the body in a pit over which a compound wall was constructed.

When Basavaraj didn’t return, his son Prashanth asked Srinivas about his whereabouts. When he did not get a proper reply, he filed a police complaint. Prashanth also filed a Habeas Corpus plea in the High Court on December 10. Police who suspected the role of Srinivas, questioned him,who later0 confessed to the murder.
