BENGALURU: The state government is taking remedial steps to reduce the number of accidents on 561 black spots across the state.

Addressing the valedictory function of 28th Road Safety Week here on Monday, Transport Commissioner M K Aiyappa said a joint action plan is being prepared by the Transport Department along with other departments, including PWD and Police to rectify the faults on black spots.

“We are also planning to reduce the number of accidents in the state by 50% by 2020,” he said.

"Karnataka was the first state in the country to pass Good Samaritan Bill to encourage passersby and bystanders to help victims of road accidents,” he added.

Transport minister Ramalinga Reddy said motorists should follow traffic rules to avoid accidents.

“There should be traffic discipline among motorists, especially youngsters. We have been holding awareness campaigns among the people to reduce the accidents,” he said.

Over the last one week, several events were organized by the Transport Department to create awareness about road safety. Several competitions were organised for students.

Blood donation and health check-up camps were also held.

Kannada film actors Shivarajkumar and Deepika Das, veteran cricketer Michael Humphrey Binny (Roger Binny) and several senior government officials were present on the occasion.
