26-year-old woman dies of swine flu in Mangaluru

A 26-year-old pregnant woman from Belthangady succumbed to H1N1 at a private hospital here on Sunday.

MANGALURU:A 26-year-old woman from Belthangady, Pushpavathi, succumbed to H1N1 (swine flu) at a private hospital here on Sunday. Pushpavathi, who was pregnant, was suffering from high fever.

Ten days ago, she had delivered a premature baby through Caesarean. The fever did not subside.Initially, she was admitted to a government hospital at Belthangady and was later shifted to a private hospital in Mangaluru, where she died.

“The swab test conducted has been analysed at the viral infection diagnosis centre at Manipal. They confirmed that she died of H1N1 infection,” Dr Rajesh B V, viral infection diseases surveillance officer, told Express. The baby is healthy, doctors said. Pushpavathi was working as a Panchayat Officer at Venoor in Belthangady taluk.

Around 165 cases of H1N1 have been reported this year so far in the district, out of which two have died, according to Dr Rajesh.District Health Officer Dr M Ramakrishna Rao said the health department has been issuing advisory on the dreaded infection.
