Follow rules on sex abuse victims, forums told

A PIL was filed in the High Court by city-based forum Peoples Movement Against Sexual Assault (PMASA) for the cause of sexual assault victims.

BENGALURU: A PIL was filed in the High Court by city-based forum Peoples Movement Against Sexual Assault (PMASA) for the cause of sexual assault victims.

They sought directions for the implementation of recommendations made by the National Commission for Women for relief and rehabilitation of the victims.
Hearing the petition on Monday, a division bench of Chief Justice Subhro Kamal Mukherjee and Justice R B Budihal issued notice to the Karnataka State Legal Service Authority, Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, Karnataka State Commission for Women and the Department of Women and Child Development.

Notice was also issued to News Broadcasting Standards Authority and Press Council of India, asking them to follow the guidelines while carrying news relating to sexual assault victims by preserving the confidentiality of identity, address or any other details of the victims or their families. The petitioner also sought directions for the establishment of a district board to ensure disbursement of compensation to the victims through a transparent procedure. They wanted awareness programmes in place for survivors of sexual violence and medical treatment and counselling for the victims.
