BENGALURU: In a move that could lend more vigour to the Lokayukta and Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Chief Secretary Subash Chandra Khuntia has instructed department heads to act on sanction for prosecution of government employees or officers within three months of receiving such request.

The Chief Secretary’s instruction to Principal Secretaries, Secretaries of all departments and Regional Commissioners comes in the backdrop of high court judge Justice A N Venugopala Gowda asking the state government recently to pass an order to all department heads to grant sanction for prosecution within three months or explain the exceptional circumstances in case of delay. Justice Gowda is monitoring the pending cases before Lokayukta.

Lokayukta Justice Vishwanath Shetty too had expressed his displeasure over the delay in according prosecution sanction against government officials in corruption cases.

Express had carried a detailed report on the huge number of cases with the Lokayukta which are awaiting prosecution sanction and also pending cases in the March 23 edition.

In more than 90 cases, the Lokayukta police are awaiting sanction from the government to prosecute government servants. Most of these cases are less than one year old and they include cases against top officials belonging to some ‘lucrative’ departments like Public Works and others.

Recently, after a long wait, the state finally gave the nod to chargesheet the suspended Chief Project Officer of Karnataka State Highways Development Project, S C Jayachandra, in connection with a disproportionate assets case. Investigation in this case was completed in 2012 itself.
