BENGALURU: The Raichur Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer (CEO), who made farmers carry him on their shoulders while cross ing a muddy stretch, came under heavy criticism in the Assembly on Friday.

JD(S) member Manappa Vajjal demanded stringent action against ZP CEO Kurma Rao. Leader of the Opposi tion Jagadish Shettar and other members supported the demand, and wanted the gover nment to act immedia tely against Rao.

Concurring with the members, Speaker K B Koliwad asked the government to seek a report from the Deputy Commissioner of Raichur and take immediate action. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Law Minister T B Jayachandra assured the House that action would be initiated without delay.

A video had emerged of Rao’s visit three days ago to some villages. At Atkur village, the villagers complained that their water supply was contaminated.

But the CEO, who was supposed to inspect the site, stopped short of crossing an area which was filled with muddy water.  The villagers then carried him on their shoulders over the stretch.
