BENGALURU:If you have a child who is waiting for his or her Class 10 (SSLC) results, and you have decided to discontinue his or her education, then an authorised person from the Department of Pre-university Education (PUE) will knock on your door to convince you to admit the child to a nearby college.

To attract children towards pre university education, the Department of PUE has decided to conduct an ‘Enrolment Drive’ from the 2017-18 academic year.

“As per the data available with us every year at least 1 lakh children are not getting admission either to PUC or to diploma courses and even we have no idea where they are going,” said a senior official of PUE Department.

In the year 2015-16, the number of students who cleared SSLC was 6.70 lakh. Of them, 4.93 lakh got admission in PU courses and 61,000 students joined diploma courses. “When we look at this data, 1.15 lakh students are not seen joining any courses and they have to be considered as dropouts. To attract such students, we are starting an enrolment drive,” an official said.

As Second PUC results are scheduled to be announced on May 10, the department has prepared a detailed plan to attract students towards colleges.

According to a circular issued by the department, lecturers working with government PU colleges have been asked to visit houses of students who have passed SSLC and those who already discontinued education after SSLC. “The drive will be conducted between the second week of May and the second week of June. We have instructed officials of the department at all levels to take part in it,” said an official.

The department has directed principals of all government PU colleges to collect information about each student who clears SSLC exam. After completion of the admission process for 2017-18 academic year, principals of all government colleges have been told to submit a report about the admission status for the last three years.

Plan to boost enrolment

If parents are refusing to send children to college, the lecturer or official who visits the house should convince them by saying there won’t be any financial burden on them.

Department will put up flex banners of toppers in front of respective colleges and also on the college notice board. The photograph of college toppers will be advertised in local cable channels too.

Colleges have been directed to give advertisements in local TV channels about the facilities available with them. The PUE department will also advertise about the facilities at the state and district level.
