Deve Gowda warns against expert panel

JD (S) supremo Deve Gowda has warned the government against agreeing to the formation of the expert panel on sharing of Cauvery waters, stating it would be detrimental to the state.

BENGALURU: JD (S) supremo Deve Gowda has warned the government against agreeing to the formation of the expert panel on sharing of Cauvery waters, stating it would be detrimental to the state.
Addressing a press conference on Friday, he said that matters related to sharing of Cauvery waters was decided by the Tribunal, which was being challenged in the Supreme Court.

“The function of the group of experts proceed on the assumption of the Tribunal’s final order that Karnataka should release 192 tmcft annually. Karnataka should oppose the constitution of an expert panel as suggested by the Government of India until the civil appeal regarding the Tribunal is disposed,” he said.

He pointed out that the Union Government appeared to be in a hurry to form the panel which is unfortunate. The distress sharing clause in the Tribunal’s order is not only arbitrary but also irrational and illogical.
He said there should be a clear definition for ‘bad years’, ‘deficit years’ and ‘distress years’ before going ahead with anything.
