BENGALURU: Responding favourably to Karnataka’s appeal to release water to mitigate the severe drinking water crisis in Vijayapura, Bagalkot and Belagavi districts, the Maharashtra government has agreed to release about 3 tmcft of water from Koyna dam from Saturday, Karnataka Water Resources minister M B Patil said.
Karnataka Water Resources Principal Secretary, during his meeting with his Maharashtra counterpart I S Chahal in Mumbai on Thursday, had requested to release 4 tmcft of water to tide over the drinking water problems being faced by the people of the three districts.
“Maharashtra government has agreed to release 3 tmcft of water. Karnataka government has released `36 crore in advance for the water to be released by Maharashtra,” Patil has said here on Friday.
The two states will also have talks soon to implement the Doodh Sagar irrigation project jointly for the benefit of farmers in both the states.
