Irked governor, government spar over pending VC appointments

The Governor and the state government appear to be on a collision course in the appointment of vice-chancellors to the universities of Bangalore and Mysore.

BENGALURU: The Governor and the state government appear to be on a collision course in the appointment of vice-chancellors to the universities of Bangalore and Mysore. In a strongly-worded letter to the State Higher Education Minister Basavaraja Rayareddi on Thursday, Governor Vajubhai Vala, who is also Chancellor of state universities, advised the minister not to point fingers at the Raj Bhavan and instead look into the functioning of his department. Vala was responding to the minister’s request to clear pending files related to the appointment of vice-chancellors to both universities.

Mysore University has been without a vice-chancellor since January this year and Bangalore University since February.Confirming this, Raj Bhavan sources said, “Recently, the minister communicated to the Governor seeking to clear pending files while also mentioning that it is the responsibility of the Chancellor to appoint candidates recommended by the government. This made the Governor angry.”
