BENGALURU: Karnataka Power Corporation Ltd (KPCL) has started the exercise of framing standard operating procedures for the safety of employees working at its electricity generating plants across the state. The move comes barely days after the fire accident on November 1 at Unchahar Thermal Power Plant operated by National Thermal Power Corporation in Raebareli where 32 lives were lost.

KPCL has thermal power plants at Yeramarus, Ballari and Raichur and workers here observe the safety procedures listed by the original equipment manufacturer while working around the boilers.
These machines generate high temperatures and have steam at high pressure, which is let into turbines to generate electricity. In order to create its own set of safety procedures, two committees have been constituted to review and audit the existing safety procedures and suggest improvements, a statement from KPCL stated.

The committees will be headed by Chief Engineers G Hanumanthappa for the Raichur Thermal Power Station and B M Murthy for the Bellary Thermal Power Station. The standard operating procedures must be submitted by the first week of December, the committees have been instructed.
