Child sex ratio in Karnataka drops from 917 to 898 in two years

Despite amendments to PC & PNDT Act in 2002, no remarkable improvement in gender ratio has been witnessed in the State.

BELAGAVI: Despite amendments to PC & PNDT Act in 2002, no remarkable improvement in gender ratio has been witnessed in the State. The girl child ratio, which was 917 per thousand boys in 2014, has now slipped to 898. This was revealed by BJP MLC Ganesh Karnik during the zero hour. He said that in the last 15 years only 79 cases of violation of the act have been reported.  Punishment was expected in just three cases. “The government should ensure punishment in more and more cases apart from checking the increasing cases of violations,” he added. In reply, Health Minister Ramesh Kumar said the government is committed to seriously deal with the scanning centres indulging in sex determination tests.
