Lightning kills two in Karnataka

KALABURAGI: Two persons were killed and another sustained injuries in lightning strikes in different parts of Kalaburagi district in Karnataka on Wednesday night.

One man was killed and his wife sustained injuries while they were sleeping in a tent adjacent to the Police Quarters in Aland town on Wednesday night. The man has been identified as Halleppa Mareppa Chatri (40). His wife Basamma sustained burn injuries and has been admitted to the Aland Taluk Government hospital.

In another incident, a farmer Ramappa died due to lightning at Kachwar village of Sedam taluk on Wednesday night. 

District officials said that  Kalaburagi district received 298.62 mm of rainfall in the last 12 hours. Sedam taluk received the highest rainfall of 52.48 mm followed by Chincholi taluk with 52.24 mm,  Kalaburagi 47.91 mm, Jewargi 47.70 mm, Chittapur 42.97 mm, Afzalpur 29.73 mm and Aland taluk 26.49 mm. The Ivani grama panchayat in Chittapur taluk received the highest rainfall of 124.5 mm in the last 12 hours.   

Sources in the agriculture department told red gram and cotton crops are likely to suffer damage due to the heavy rains.
