Mangaluru road not all that safe yet

Hours after throwing it open for traffic, district in-charge minister UT Khader announced that the newly concreted Shiradi Ghat will be open only for two wheelers and four wheelers, including mini-bus

MANGALURU: Hours after throwing it open for traffic, district in-charge minister UT Khader announced that the newly concreted Shiradi Ghat will be open only for two wheelers and four wheelers, including mini-buses. The entry of buses, trucks and heavy vehicles will be banned for the next 15 days. Though the concretisation has been completed for the entire 13km, the works on road shoulders, crash guards and safety walls are yet to be completed.

Recently, a safety wall caved in here. The incomplete road shoulders also pose a danger if the vehicles come to the extreme of roads and land is still soft at road shoulders. Ahead of the inauguration, Deputy Commissioner, Sasikanth Senthil said that they would allow all vehicles for a period of one day and take a call after observation. It will take another 15 days to complete rest of safety measures. The progress is good as the contractors are able to cover 450 metre of work per day even amidst heavy rains lashing the ghat section, he mentioned.
