MYSURU: Tension gripped Mandya when a sericulture farmer attempted suicide by consuming poison during a protest against crash in prices of cocoons, on Monday.

The farmers who took out a rally and laid seige to the DC’s office, urged the DC to receive their memorandum addressed to the CM. When the DC did not turn up, Chowde Gowda (42) of Ambarahalli took the extreme step. Police rushed him to VIMS Medical College Hospital.

Meanwhile,  CM H D Kumaraswamy said he will hold talks with farmers before announcing support price. However, he urged farmers not to take any hasty decision. He said the government will pay a support price of ` 50 per kg to Bivoltine and `30 per kg to Kolar Chinna, if the prices crash below `300 per kg.
