‘Don’t spread rumours on death of Shiroor seer’

UDUPI: Udupi police have remained tight-lipped about the suspicious death of Lakshmivara Theertha of Shiroor Mutt in Udupi.

The seer died on Thursday after suffering from gastrointestinal bleeding. Though the police have questioned four people in the case, they seem to have made no breakthrough in the case so far, sources told The New Indian Express.

Meanwhile, a rumour ran high in a section of media on Sunday that a woman with whom the seer was said to be close, offered juice laced with poisonous substances in order to kill him.  But Udupi Superintendent of Police of Laxman Nimbargi termed it ‘rumour’ and said such kind of unverified information will spoil the investigation.

Denying the report of the seer being poisoned to death by a woman, the superintendent of police said there is nothing of this sort that has taken place in this suspicious death case of the seer. The SP said any lead in the investigation will share with mediapersons officially and requested not to spread unverified information. Meanwhile, police sources said they have not questioned anybody in this case, however, the investigation into the case from other angles continued, sources said.
