KARWAR: The mortal remains of Kumta resident Varun Chandra, who allegedly committed suicide in Delhi for not being allowed to write UPSC exams on Sunday, were cremated in Kumta town on Tuesday.
The 28-year-old was hoping to clear UPSC prelims this year and dreaming of becoming an IAS officer. From last six months, he was getting coaching for UPSC exams in New Delhi and staying in a rented accommodation with two others at Rajindra Nagar of Central Delhi.

On Sunday morning, he first reached the wrong venue and from there he rushed to the assigned exam centre. When he reached exam hall, it was 4-minute late and he was denied permission to write the exam. Disappointed over this, Varun hanged himself in his rented accommodation and his body was noticed by his friend in the evening.

On being informed, his sister and actress Pallavi Purohit and his brother-in-law rushed to New Delhi in the evening and brought his body to Kumta by 4.30 am on Tuesday. As per family tradition, he was cremated at a burial ground near Kumta bus depot.

Varun was the son of Subhash Chandran, who was a professor in Dr AV Baliga College in Kumta. After retirement, he is now working as a scientist at the field station of Indian Institute of Science in Kumta.
According to Varun’s friends, he was a bright student and he did his BE from SDM College of Engineering in Dharwad. After that, he was staying with his sister Pallavi Purohit in Mumbai. He was more interested in administrative job. Hence, he had decided to write the UPSC exams.

‘A hard-worker’

Though he took UPSC prelims last year, he could not succeed. “He was a hard worker and was very good in English. After getting coaching in Delhi, he was very confident of clearing the prelims this year,” they said.

On Tuesday, he was supposed to attend one more administrative exam in Mumbai and he had already booked flight ticket for the purpose. After denying entry to exam for arriving four minutes late, he might have become very upset and ended his life, he added. According to locals, Varun came to Kumta during last Diwali and stayed there for nearly a month.
