Gauri Lankesh murder case: Vijayapura could see more arrests

VIJAYAPURA: Vijayapura has now become a hunting ground for the Special Investigative Team which has hinted that more arrests could be possible from the district in the Gauri Lankesh murder case. It was a country-made pistol used for the murder that led the Special Investigation Team (SIT) team to Vijayapura which has some known gun runners.

According to sources, multiple teams of Special Investigation Team personnel are currently camped  in the district in order to crack the case. It is said that the SIT has quizzed at least 1,000 people in the district, especially members of Hindu organisations.The Special Investigation Team had even crossed borders looking for smugglers of country pistols but did not get much intel.

It was only after seven months that they arrested Manohar Edave of Ratnapura village for allegedly supplying the pistol. Edave’s arrest came only after K T Naveen Kumar of Maddur, another accused in the case and founder of Hindu Yuva Sene, named Edave. Kumar is accused of providing logistical support for the murder.

A month after Edave’s was takeninto custody, the police detained two people from Vijayapura on June 9 — Parashuram Waghmare (26) and Sunil Madivallapa Agasar (25) from Sindhagi. Special Investigation Team on Tuesday said Waghmare was the one who shot Gauri.

Mystery unravels

February 18

K T Naveen Kumar (37) arrested for conspiring to murder Prof K S Bhagawan. Hailing from Mandya, Naveen allegedly conducted recce at Gauri Lankesh’s house. When held, he was found in possession of live bullets.

May 19

Sujeet Kumar alias Praveen (37), had allegedly provided logistics for Gauri’s murder. He was arrested in connection with K S Bhagwan’s murder. 43 mobile phones were recovered from him when he was arrested.

May 21

Amol Kale alias Bhaisaab (37), a resident of Pune, was allegedly involved in campaigns against celebration of Valentine’s Day. 21 SIM cards and few phones were recovered. Suspected to be the mastermind behind Gauri’s murder.
Amith Degwekar alias Pradeep Mahajan (38), hails from Maharashtra. He was living with Malgonda Patil, who died while trying to plant a bomb in Madgaon in Goa in 2009. He is suspected to have taught Parashuram shooting.
Manohar Edave alias Manoj (29), from Vijayapura was found with a diary that had notes about steps to be taken during reconnaissance, interestingly the sketch of a map allegedly indicating the location of Gauri’s home in RR Nagar.

June 11

Parashuram Waghmare (26), a resident of Sindgi in Vijayapura and suspected to be the shooter who killed Gauri, was arrested. He regularly attended events organised by Sri Ram Sena and was arrested in 2012 after he hoisted a Pakistan flag in Sindagi.
