BENGALURU: Gross neglect, corruption and competition from private players has pushed state-owned Janata Bazaars to the verge of extinction. Bandeppa Kashempur, the new minister for Co-operation, has big plans for their revival. He shared his thoughts on the role the Co-operation Department could play in mitigating the plight of marginal farmers through co-operative farming on the lines of Kibbutz in Israel. Excerpts:

What are your priorities for improving your  department?
There are many facets to my department as it deals with urban consumers to poor farmers. I am working on my plan to rejuvenate Janata Bazaars which are struggling for existence. Janata Bazaars in all districts will get a make over into modern supermarkets. They will  help farmers to
better price for their produce.

Any clarity on the conditions for the proposed farm loan waiver?
Chief Minister himself is working out the modalities for fulfilling the promise on farm loan waiver. The details will be announced soon.

Any new programmes for the
welfare of farmers?
I am working on reforms in the department. We have Co-operative societies to provide financial assistance for farmers. I am keen to introduce collective farming on the lines of Kibbutz  in Israel. Forming farmers’ cooperatives with assistance from the government in the form of modern farming equipment, expert guidance and financial assistance will help small and marginal farmers in a big way. We will showcase the Israeli model to our farmers.

Housing Co-operative
societies have become dens of real estate scams...
This has come to my notice.   We will bring necessary amendments to the existing rules to protect the interests of common citizens who approach these co-operative societies to fulfil their dream of having a house of their own.
