Karnataka: Farmers cheer as reservoir reaches max level

SHIVAMOGGA: For the sixth time since its inception, Bhadra reservoir has reached its maximum capacity this year. The reservoir received 10 tmc of water in the month of June and on the morning of June 17, it reached the capacity of 136 feet of water as against the maximum limit of 186 feet. The reservoir had formerly reached its optimum capacity in the years 1971, 77, 1991, 1992 and 1997.

With the rise in the water level, the demand and hope among the farming community is high. The farmers in Davanagere district have already demanded the Bhadra Command Area Development Authority to release water for the paddy crop immediately.

The water level stood at 112.80 feet on June 4 and reached 134.20 on June 15. About 22 feet of water entered the reservoir following incessant rains in catchment areas like Koppa, N R Pura and Sringeri of Chikkamagaluru district.
