BENGALURU: The legal battle against the reservation system for promotion of SC/ST employees in Karnataka is far from over as the General Category Employees’ Association has decided to approach the Supreme Court against the Bill which has received Presidential assent. The state government, however, is preparing to implement the new Act.

In February 2017, the Supreme Court struck down the reservation system in promotion for SC/ST employees after General Category employees sought judicial recourse. The state government had passed a Bill later to circumvent the SC order and the Bill received Presidential nod on June 14.

Having got the Presidential assent for the Karnataka Extension of Consequential Seniority to Government Servants Promoted on the Basis of Reservation (to the posts in the civil services of the state) Bill 2017, the state government is set to seek the Law Department’s opinion on the way forward.
