BENGALURU: Activists have alleged that implementation of the KC Valley Project has put the residents of the villages in jeopardy. With no assessment on the possible impact the project could have on the people and the environment, they fear that the villagers are sitting ducks to the ramifications the project could cause.

Anjaneya Reddy of Shashvatha Neeravari Horata Samithi — who has filed Public Interest Litigation regarding the issue — said there was no clarity on the effluents that were being treated even in the Detailed Project Report of the project. “There is also an IISc report that states that secondary treatment of sewage cannot rid it of all toxic elements. The repercussions of the project could be detrimental to the local population,” he said.

A Shankar, a resident of Lakshmisagar, opined that the reports based on samples collected during the past few days were unlikely to be reflective of the real condition of the lake. “They collected the samples at a time when half the lake was already filled with water. They should check its quality when the whole of the lake is filled with that,” he added.

Karnataka State Pollution Control Board  chairman Laxman said regular checks of water quality are being carried out. “Samples are tested at the sewage treatment plant near Varthur and also before it’s left into the lakes,” he said.
