GADAG: People who visit the Deputy Commissioner’s office are often made to wait for long hours. Therefore, Gadag’s DC Manoj Jain thought of opening a library for them.He shared this idea with his staff and they responded enthusiastically and helped implement it in no time. The Gadag DC office has now become the first to have a library for visitors.

The office staff started collecting books in May. Today the library has more than 2,000 books on varied subjects including History, Economics, Sociology, Biology, Music and Literature. People can also take their pick from 12 Kannada dailies, 4 English dailies and one monthly magazine.

No funds had been sanctioned for this library from the government. The staff, therefore, got book racks from the Dharwad Central Library and books from various libraries in Gadag-Betageri. The staff even repaired chairs that were lying around in the DC office and placed them in this reading corner, which can now seat a total of 30 people.

DC Manoj Jain told TNIE, “People who come here for their work have to wait for hours sometimes. They usually kill time by roaming around outside. So we thought they could use their time better, by reading books or newspapers, and started this library.”

Muttanna Hosalli, a library staffer, said, “Every day about 40 people visit the library and the number is growing as more people hear of it. The DC office staff also visit here to refer gazettes. This is a new experiment in Karnataka”.
