Bengaluru slides to 216 in Swachh ranking, Mysuru at 8

Bengaluru slid further down from its ranking of 210 last year in the latest Swachh Survekshan rankings, as it was ranked at 216. 

BENGALURU: Bengaluru slid further down from its ranking of 210 last year in the latest Swachh Survekshan rankings, as it was ranked at 216. The rankings are based on surveys conducted by the Swachh Bharat mission.Among cities with a population between one and 10 lakh, Mysuru, ranked 8, was the highest ranked city in Karnataka followed by Mangaluru at 52. Mysuru was ranked number one in the 2015 survey, and was in fifth place last year. Indore in Madhya Pradesh repeated last year’s feat by yet again being ranked as the cleanest city with an overall score of 3,707 out of 4,000, followed by Bhopal, Chandigarh and New Delhi.

Bengaluru, which has been grappling with issues of solid waste management, polluted lakes and clogged storm water drains among others, received a score of 2,001.98 out of 4,000. A total of 26 cities from Karnataka were among the top 500 cities in the country.Surveys were carried out in a total of 4,203 cities in the country. Cities are ranked based on their solid waste management, waste water and sewage treatment, town planning, communication planning and other aspects.

Among towns with a population of less than one lakh, Panchgani in Maharashtra topped the list with a score of 3,184 out of 4,000, followed by Siddipet in Telangana and Shirdi in Maharashtra. In this category, Periyapatna, ranked 43, was the only city from Karnataka in the top 100 list.Compared to other metro cities, Bengaluru lagged far behind as New Delhi (4), Navi Mumbai (9), Greater Mumbai (18), Greater Hyderabad (27) and Chennai (100) were all ranked much higher on the list.
