Formalin-laced fish: Officials rush to inspect storage units in Mangaluru

With the fishing ban in the coast, the fish from Eastern Coast is ferried to Western Coast.

MANGALURU: Following a scare of fish laced with formalin coming to the markets, Food Safety Officials in Mangaluru city started inspecting fish markets and fish storage units in the city on Tuesday.

Around 4.30 am, the team comprising Food Safety Officer, Dr Naveen Kulal and Senior Food Safety Officer Raju headed by Designated Officer for Food Safety, Dr Rajesh visited the fish market at Bunder where the fish consignments from Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh are off-loaded. With the fishing ban in the coast, the fish from Eastern Coast is ferried to Western Coast. “We have inspected the fish market at Bunder where the trucks from neighbouring states unload their fish and found that they are recently caught fish and not preserved,” Dr Rajesh mentioned.
