Nearly four months after it was announced, the state government has officially ordered a Criminal Investigation Department (CID) probe into the alleged malpractices in teacher education colleges affiliated to Bangalore University (BU).

The government order dated April 15 asks the Cyber Crime Police, CID to invoke the Information Technology Act, 2000, and investigate into the allegation that some BEd colleges under BU had made unauthorised use of the university logo on various websites to attract students from outside Karnataka through ‘agents’ with the promise of offering students BEd degrees without classes.

The first information report (FIR) was filed by the university on February 5 at the Jnana Bharathi police station. This comes at a time when the university has undertaken its own exercise, through expert committees, to inspect BEd colleges under the scanner for academic irregularities.

The BEd calendar of events for the year 2012-13 has already taken a beating due to the ongoing affiliation crisis, with the university postponing the first semester BEd exams by almost a month to May 23.
