The campaign by HD Deve Gowda and Shakuntala Bangarappa seems to have infused new life in the JD(S) in Shimoga LS constituency in the last two days.

Though MLA Madhu Bangarappa’s campaign for his sister and JD(S) candidate Geetha Shivarajkumar created euphoria in rural areas, the party failed to get a firm grip because of lack of workers at the grassroots level.

The claim by BJP and Congress leaders that the fight here is only between them and JD(S) has no significance, is another setback for the party.

However, the picture seems to have changed in the last two days.

Gowda addressed a public gathering in Tirthahalli while Shakuntala Bangarappa campaigned in several villages of Bhadravati taluk.

On Saturday, Madhu Bangarappa got support from his wife Anitha during campaign ing in Shimoga city.

On Sunday, the JD(S) seemed to have bounced back with a roadshow by actors Srinagara Kitti and Ragini along with film producer Sa Ra Govindu in Bhadravati taluk. They were joined by Madhu Bangarappa and Geetha.

Local leaders have expressed confidence that more Vokkaligas have switched over to the JD(S).

Former Union minister SM Krishna, who is the ‘son-in-law’ of Tirthahalli, campaigned for the Congress earlier.

The BJP also has a strong hold in Tirthahalli with Araga Jnanendra elected thrice to the assembly.

The BJP seems to be losing its grip on Lingayats in Shimoga city.

This was a sudden development in last three days. Several Lingayat leaders, including former MLA H M Chandrashekharappa expressed their solidarity to the Congress.

“There is no binding that Lingayats should always back the BJP. Congress also has given opportunities to many Lingayat leaders. Lingayats are upset with frequent changing of loyalty by their ‘self-declared leader’ Yeddyurappa. This time some sub-sects of Lingayats will support Congress,” claimed a group of Congress leaders.

The Congress is improving its base through padayatras and door-to-door campaigning.
