The Janata Dal (S) state unit is likely to get a new president after the Lok Sabha poll results on May 16.

This has become necessary following the sudden death of incumbent president A Krishnappa on Wednesday.

Sources told Express that there is no hurry in electing a new president which would be done after May 16. It would be difficult to say now whether the new president will be from Deve Gowda’s family or someone else in the party. “Our leaders have to sit, discuss and consult party legislators before taking any decision,” they said.

The sources said that when Kumaraswamy resigned as president, several names like Basavaraj Horatti, N Cheluvarayaswamy, Y S V Datta and H D Revanna popped up for the post.

But none of them agreed to accept the responsibility, and Krishnappa was chosen.

According to sources, there is a demand from the rank and file to re-instate Kumaraswamy as president. But the question is whether Gowda will like a second innings by his son. Besides, the party has to keep other options open if Kumaraswamy wins from Chikballapur Lok Sabha constituency.

Krishnappa, a noted backward classes leader, was persuaded to accept the post after JD(S) was branded as a party of father and sons.
