The truckers’ strike that began on Saturday midnight across the state was called off on Monday following talks with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. However, the 25-day-old sand transporters’ strike will continue.

Federation of Karnataka State Lorry Owners’ and Agents’ Association president G R Shanmugappa told Express that the commercial transporters, tourism taxi and maxicab operators have decided to end the strike. They took the decision following the Chief Minister’s assurance that their demands will be considered. The demands included revision of overload limit, withdrawal of minimum qualification of SSLC pass for driving licence to commercial vehicles, reduce tax burden on tourist taxis and stable diesel prices.

However, Shanmugappa said sand lorries will continue to stay off the road as their demand for issue of permits to transport sand was not addressed satisfactorily. The government has sought a week’s time to consider their demands.
