A team of medical experts from Shimoga will visit the Bandipur National Park on Wednesday in the wake of confirmed deaths of a dozen monkeys due to Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD).

The blood samples of the monkeys, sent to the National Institute of Virology in Pune, have attributed the death to KFD or monkey fever. So far, 12 monkeys have died and five forest personnel have been infected.

Kumar Pushkar, director of Project Tiger of Bandipur National Park, told Express that these experts had experience in handling such cases in Sagar, Sorab and Shimoga. The team would visit Alegowdananakatte camp in Maddur division of Bandipur and nearby villages. He said the KFD was a ‘treatable’. The staff in Bandipur had been vaccinated, he said and added, KFD is not contagious.
