KOCHI: Bypass surgery pioneer Sudansu Bhattacharya performed a surgery on beating heart at the Lisie Heart Institute here along with chief cardiac surgeon Jose Chacko Periappuram on Saturday.

The surgery was telecast live to the conference room at the Lisie Hospital, enabling over 25 cardiac surgeons assembled there to discuss and clarify doubts.

Dr Bhattacharya has pioneered most of the advancements in bypass surgery in the country.

He was the first to perform bypass using arteries alone and also on a beating heart.

The Mumbai-based doctor is known for his surgical dexterity and perfection. This was his second visit to the state to demonstrate bypass surgery on a beating heart.

The surgery, which was performed on a 54- year-old patient, was successful. It was telecast from 9 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. ``We want this to be a medical education programme for cardiac surgeons across the state. Dr Bhattacharya has trained a lot of young surgeons. The surgeons were able to know the latest surgical techniques, clarify their doubts and utilise the knowledge to provide advanced care to patients through this surgery,’’Dr Periappuram had said earlier. ``Bypass surgery on beating heart has a number of advantages over the conventional method which uses the heart-lung machine. It is also less expensive,’’ said Dr Periappuram, who has done around 5,000 surgeries on beating heart.
