KOCHI: After nine years of service, Justice K Balakrishnan Nair of the Kerala High Court will retire on April 12. A full court reference will be held at the High Court on Friday in honour o f Justice Balakrishnan.

He was appointed an additional judge of the High Court on September 7, 2001 and permanent judge on November 27, 2002. Justice Balakrishnan, who enrolled as an advocate in November 1975, started independent practice in the High Court in 1988 in civil, criminal, labour and Constitutional matters.

Before that, he had practised in courts at Muvattupuzha and Ernakulam.

Born on April 12, 1948, at Mulavoor village near Muvattupuzha, he had his schooling from LPG School, Trikalathoor, NSS UP School, Mannoor and St Thomas High School, Keezhillam. He later studied at Nirmala College, Muvattupuzha, and Law Academy in Thiruvananthapuram.

As an advocate he has worked as the standing counsel for Kerala Agricultural University, Thrissur, Kollam District Co-operative Banks, Kochi Corporation and Kerala Motor Transport Workers Welfare Fund Board. He has served as the chairman of the Kerala High Court Legal Service Committee.

He also served as the head of committee for Framing High Court Rules and High Court Service Rules and Committee for High Court Building and Judges Quarters.
