The Forest Department is all set to observe the Earth Day on Monday. The Department has scheduled several programmes for the Earth Day across the state to create awareness and initiate action at the individual level through collaborative efforts.

In Kochi, the Forest Department will observe the Earth Day at the Info Park campus. A seminar- ‘Collaborative Partnerships’- A strategy for climate change mitigation’ will be organised. Based on the outcome of the seminar, green initiatives, including greening of the Info Park campus will be taken up.

This will provide an opportunity to Infotech companies to develop a longterm partnership with the Department of Forests and Wildlife. In Thiruvananthapuram, the Social Forestry Wing of the Forest Department along with the NCC will commence its collaborative partnership programme - observing the year 2013 as the Year of Eco-Conservation. The activities will focus on four areas, including afforestation, conservation of water bodies, waste management and energy conservation.

In the capital city, the Earth Day  celebrations will be held at the NCC headquarters. There will be a cycle rally as part of the observation. The cycle rally will culminate at the Museum where there will be a street play by the NCC cadets which conveys the message of this year’s theme: The Face of Climate Change.

The ACF (Social Forestry) of each district will work with local NCC units and undertake programmes in each of the four areas as part of making the Year of Eco-conservation meaningful and effective. The forest personnel will make presentations about forest ecosystems, services, challenges of biodiversity conservation and the role of NCC cadets in addressing climate change.
