It appears that Jasem Mohammed Abdul Karim Abdullalahmed, the protagonist of the ‘Arabikalyanam’ in Kozhikode, did exactly the same thing that his father did 28 years ago. Persons close to the family told Express that Jasem’s father, an Arab, married Sulaika of Mughadar and later divorced her. He, then, returned to the UAE along with elder son Jasem. Sulaika later got married to Muneer of Payyanakkal and the couple has two children.
Jasem married a 17-year-old Muslim girl from Malappuram, an inmate of the Mukhadhar Ciesco Orphanage in Kozhikode, on June 13 this year and flew back to the UAE on July 1 without informing her.
In her complaint lodged with the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), the girl had alleged that the orphanage officials had threatened her to marry Jasem as they had financial benefits from the marriage.
Ciesco Girls Home (Yatheemkhana) secretary P T Mohammed Ali said that the authorities knew Sulaika and her family. “Though settled with his father in the Gulf, Jasem used to visit Sulaika almost every year. That’s why we supported the marriage. Sulaika’s husband Muneer is the first witness of this marriage held on June 13.”
Ciesco also issued a marriage certificate as per the marriage registration no.90/2013 of the Kerala Jam-Iyyathul Ulama, Markazuda’wa.
Jasem, 28, returned to the UAE in the first week of July. On August 13, he rang up Mohammed Ali and said that he was filing for a divorce. “We were shocked to hear this. Jasem said that he had to go to the US as part of a training and could return only after seven or eight years. Immediately, we contacted Sulaika’s family here. Later, he sent the documents relating to divorce,” the secretary said.
As per Yatheemkhana authorities, the girl and her mother have given in writing to them about their willingness for the marriage.
