'Cong Will be Rooted Out in South'

The Congress will be rooted out “mercilessly’’ in the south Indian states in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, BJP national vice-president Bandaru Dattatreya said on Thursday, adding that Kerala was about to witness a ‘tremendous’ political change.

The Congress will be rooted out “mercilessly’’ in the south Indian states in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, BJP national vice-president Bandaru Dattatreya said on Thursday, adding that Kerala was about to witness a ‘tremendous’ political change.

The BJP is about to emerge a ‘formidable force’ in the state. The response to the BJP and Narendra Modi is overwhelming, Dattatreya, who chaired the party’s state office-bearers meeting of the BJP on Thursday, said.

At the national level, the new, first-time young voters - approximately 12 crore - are going to decide the fate of the elections this time, he said.

“Surveys show that 80 per cent of the new, young voters are rooting for Narendra Modi. This should not be underestimated by any political party,” he said. The results of the 2014 Lok Sabha elections will be akin to the 1977 general elections which saw the Congress party losing for the first time, Dattatreya said.

“That type of public anger is there against the UPA and the Congress,’’ he said. “The ‘77 elections totally wiped out the Congress. This time, Congress will be rooted out in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and even Tamil Nadu and Kerala,’’ he said.

Terming the UPA Government’s response to the US treatment of Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade as “toothless”, he demanded a formal apology from the US on the issue.
