A day after the Union Government accorded sanction to prosecute Inspector General of Police Tomin Thachankary in a misappropriation case, the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) has submitted a chargesheet against the Managing Director of Marketfed, (Kerala State Cooperative Marketing Federation), the post he presently holds, in connection with a case investigated by the Vigilance on charge of amassing wealth beyond his known sources of income in an illegal manner.

The chargesheet was presented in the Thrissur Vigilance Court on Monday. The chargesheet that runs into over 1,000 pages, along with 212 documents to support the investigation, states that the senior cop had amassed Rs 64 lakh more than his known sources of income in an illegitimate manner during his service period from 2003-07.

While considering a petition filed by Thrissur-based social activist P D Joseph on Saturday, Vigilance Inquiry Commissioner and Special Judge (Vigilance) had postponed the hearing in the case to August 5 as the additional legal adviser sought one more week’s time to submit the report. A request of the VACB to prosecute Thachankary is pending with the state and the Centre Governments for the last two years. The Thirssur Vigilance Court had also registered its displeasure a number of times in the alleged delay in the prosecution proceedings against Tomin Thachankary in the case. Earlier, Thachankary was placed under suspension in connection with a probe by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) regarding complaints of his unauthorised foreign trips and connection with fundamental outfits. He was reinstated in service a few months ago.
