Homage paid to house surgeons killed in Vagamon accident

The students, doctors and staff of the Kottayam Medical College, family members and natives, on Thursday, rendered sorrowful homage to four young house surgeons, who met with a tragic end when the car they were travelling fell in to a deep gorge near Vagamon on Tuesday night. Large number of people gathered at the MCH and residential premises of the deceased house surgeons to pay their tributes.

The house surgeons at the MCH here, K C Aneesh Kumar, 24, hailing from Kunnupurathu house, Mannamala, Peroor, Ratheesh Kumar R, 24, of Anchal near Kollam, Anto C James, 24, hailing from Chaliplackal house, Udumannoor near Thodupuzha, and Joseph George, 24, of Kaduthanam house, Thrikkodithanam near Changanassery died in that accident at Thangalpara near Vagamon High Ranges. Two other house surgeons in the team Vishnu Dayal, 24 and Alphons Jithin, who were thrown off from the car, escaped with serious injuries. According to MCH sources, the conditions of Vishnu, who sustained serious head injury and Alphons, who was admitted with multiple fractures, are stable.

While, the bodies of Aneesh, Ratheesh and Anto were cremated at their respective homes on Thursday, Joseph’s funeral will be held on Friday at 2.30 pm. The bodies of the deceased were kept at the C-Block of the MCH on Wednesday noon to pay homage. Minister for Rural affairs K C Joseph, LDF convener Vaikom Viswan, K Suresh Kurup MLA, former MLAs Thomas Chazhikkadan, Stephan George and V N Vasavan, DCC president Tomy Kallani and Kerala Congress leader P C Thomas reached the MCH to pay homage to the deceased. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Health Minister V S Sivakumar contacted the relatives over phone.

The incident occurred at around 8.30 pm on Tuesday when the car in which they were travelling along the Koottickal-Elangad road fell into a gorge of a depth of 2,000 feet. It is suspected that the driver of the vehicle lost control in the heavy mist in Vagamon hills. 

The house surgeons had left for Vagamon on Tuesday afternoon. Though, the rescue operations led by local residents had commenced shortly after the accident, it got delayed in the mist. Police and fire force units from Kottayam and Idukki districts had also joined the operation, which was hampered due to heavy rain and fog.
