Air hostess arrested for gold smuggling

Two women passengers, including an air hostess, were nabbed by the officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI)

Two women passengers, including an air hostess, were nabbed by the officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) at Karipur International Airport on Friday for smuggling six kilograms of gold worth Rs1.84 crore. The arrested were Air India air hostess Hiromasa V Sebastian, a native of Pulpally in Wayanad, and Raahila from Thalassery, officials said. The duo, who arrived by an Air India Express flight IX 344 from Dubai, tried to illegally bring six gold bars each weighing one kilo into the state by concealing them under the belt. “We got a tip-off regarding the gold smuggling involving the air hostess. They were nabbed as soon as they cleared the Customs inspection. Probe is on to nab more persons in the racket,” DRI sleuths informed. Hiromasa has reportedly been on leave from duty for the past six months to engage in gold smuggling. Sources said the air hostess was suspended from service and a departmental inquiry has been ordered by Air India.
