Court dismisses bail pleas of Asifa, Arifa

Ernakulam Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (Economic Offences) has dismissed the bail petitions of Asifa Veerappoyil and Arifa Haris, the second and third accused respectively in the gold smuggling case.

The court also directed  jail authorities to provide medical care to Asifa Verroppoyil, who is three months pregnant.  N V Raju, Ernakulam Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate dismissing the pleas said that since the case is still under investigation, the accused persons cannot be released on bail.

 Jayaraj Nambiar, the counsel for the accused submitted that his client Asifa be given bail as she is three months pregnant and requires urgent medical care. There is no one to look after the child of Arifa after her arrest, he submitted. However, the prosecution said that all medical facilities have been provided to the accused at the Ernakulam District Jail.  The court remanded Asifa and Arifa in judicial custody till October 11.   The Customs team investigating the smuggling case visited Chennai Airport and collected details about similar cases reported there.

 According to officials, Fayaz and his gang had smuggled gold through Chennai more than 10 times this year alone.
