Environmentalists in Kozhikode are absolutely against any developmental activities here and they want to preserve the sacred grove as it is.

“It is a centre of biodiversity and needs to be preserved without changing its natural environment. All we can do there is fence the whole area to protect it from encroachment.

I don’t think that a temple is needed there, as construction of a temple will only harm the environment. A pilgrim or tourist centre will attract more and more people, which will spoil the place,” says A Achuthan, environmentalist.

He also says that an alltime flowing stream and the loop-shaped roots are unique features of the grove.

“Develop it into a national biodiversity centre not as a place of pilgrimage. "We should not disturb the rare kinds of trees and animals in the sacred grove with activities in the name of development,” says Achuthan.

Environmentalis T Shobheendran’s views echoed the words of Achuthan and says, “Vallikattukavu is known for its unique natural beauty which one cannot see anywhere else.

"Giving a religious touch to it is not fair. Develop it into a green pilgrim centre and not as a religious centre. Being a socially irresponsible society in which we live, fencing will help preserve the place,” says Shobheendran.
