The glass panel of the car in which Chandy was travelling was shattered in the stone pelting and some shards hit his forehead on two spots.

The incident occurred at 5.40 pm near the Police Club. State Rural Development Minister K C Joseph, KPCC general secretary T Siddique and CM’s personal security Ravi were also in the car.

He came here to attend the valedictory function of the Kerala Police athletic meet.

Chandy was sitting on the left side of the car and  Joseph on the right. Siddique, in a bid to protect the CM, also suffered minor injuries.

The protesters, who came to show black flags to the CM as part of their campaign to press for his resignation over the solar panel scam, poured on to the street from all sides and chased the CM’s convoy breaking the heavy police protection. The police vehicles also came under attack.

They tried to block his way by jumping in front of the vehicle and also threw black flags. Despite security cover, including a  team of Rapid Action Force, they could not stop the protesters.

Some activists came close to the car and hit it before pelting the stones.

Later, police resorted to lathicharge after the attack on CM’s convoy. Around 200 DYFI and LDF workers under the leadership of C K Krishnan MLA and K K Narayanan MLA had gathered near the Police Club before the CM’s arrival.

The situation was very tense in the town as LDF workers gathered on all the roads near the Police Parade Grounds, venue of the athletic meet.

Earlier, LDF leaders P Jayarajan, M V Jayarajan and P K Sreemathi entered the police games village premises and staged a sit-in protest. DYFI men, who had gathered at  another gate of the games village near the Town Traffic Police Station destroyed a few flex boards erected by the DCC welcoming the CM.
