SIT formed to probe attack on Chandy

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to probe into the attack on  Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Sunday, amidst speculation that a reshuffle in the district police force is on the cards.

Kannur Range IG Suresh Raj Purohit, as per the instructions of DGP K S Balasubramanian, constituted the SIT led by Thaliparamba DySP K S Sudarshan on Wednesday to conduct the probe.

The team also comprises Iritty DySP Pradeepkumar, six circle inspectors, sub-inspectors and civil police officers.

As the police have filed cases against 1,000 LDF workers belonging to different parts of the district, the SIT will conduct the probe as a separate team.

In the midst of these developments, the speculation that the government might take disciplinary action against the top police officials in the district, as a fall-out of the security mix-up that led to the attack on the Chief Minister, has gained more currency.

The District Congress Committee had demanded action against the police officers responsible for the security slip. K Sudhakaran MP had pointed fingers at the pro-CPM police officers in the district as responsible for the lapse.

Rural Development Minister K C Joseph had also gone public reprimanding the police for leaking out the itinerary of the Chief Minister.

The formation of the SIT, keeping the town DySP away from it, has strengthened the speculation of a possible rejig in the district police top brass.

Meanwhile, DySP K S Sudarshan, the head of  SIT, said that the team  arrested 29 LDF activists on Wednesday from various parts of the district in connection with the case, out of that six persons were granted bail.
