LDF activists on Wednesday showed black flags and threw rotten eggs on the vehicles of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Agriculture Minister K P Mohanan, who arrived for the inauguration of the district procurement centre of Horticorp in Anayara here. Traffic was blocked on the Kazhakoottam bypass for around an hour owing to the melee between the activists and the police.

The Chief Minister, who delayed his arrival by an hour anticipating the protest, was blocked by the activists near the venue. The police lathi-charged the activists who had blocked the convoy showing black flags. An activist, who was roughed up by the police, was later admitted to the Medical College Hospital. K P Mohanan, who had arrived on time, also fell prey to the protest. The activists threw rotten eggs and showed black flag to him too. The Ministers made their return journey through another road to avoid untoward incidents. City Police Commissioner P Vijayan said that a special assistant police commissioner would inquire into the police attack on the activists.

Attack on CPM Men: Grade SI Suspended

T’Puram: The Poonthura Grade Sub-Inspector, Vijayadas, who brutally attacked a CPM activist at Anayara here on Wednesday was suspended by the DGP on the Home Minister’s directive.

Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan directed the DGP to take immediate action against the Grade SI who purposefully stamped the genitals of CPM activist Jayaprasad, while other cops held him tight. Jayaprasad, 32, of Thamarabhagam near Murinjapalam here was hospitalised later following the attack. He collapsed on the spot after Vijayadas repeatedly stamped on the groin region. According to ADGP (South Zone) A Hemachandran, the officer was beyond the limits.

“While all other cops were trying to apprehend the protester, he alone was seen attacking him,” he said. “’The medical reports showed that there were no major injuries on his private parts,” he said.

VS, Pinarayi Condemn Action

T’Puram: Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan has demanded that a case should be registered against the policemen who had brutally beaten up a CPM worker for waving black flag at Chief Minister Oommen Chandy when he came to inaugurate Horticorp’s district centre at Anayara here on Wednesday.
