The full size statue of the late Annie Mascarene, who had left her mark as a spirited freedom fighter and later as a parliamentarian, was unveiled near Government Women’s College at Vazhuthacaud here on Wednesday by Vice President Hamid Ansari.

“Annie Mascarene had proved her mettle in various spheres. She had achieved much in her lifetime.

It is the goodness of people to remember their forefathers,’’ the Vice-President said, after unveiling the statue.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, who inaugurated the function, felt that Annie Mascarene will always be remembered as a courageous personality who fought against the tyrannical rule of Diwan Sir CP.

‘’She was in the forefront of historical freedom struggle in Travancore,’’ he said.

Speaking on the occasion, Latin Archbishop  Soosai Pakiam said that Annie Mascarene was one who had loved various sections of society  and aspired for the welfare of all while remaining committed to the cause of the Latin Catholic society.

‘’She had formed the Latin Mahasabha for the upliftment of her own community during the pre-Independence struggle period.  But when she was convinced that it should not create any hurdle, she disbanded it after independence,’’ he said.

According to Cardinal Baselios Cleemis Catholicos, the woman leader from Travancore was one who had become the pride of the whole country.
