Taking another stride towards the realisation of the Kannur International Airport project, Defence Minister A K Antony inaugurated the work on the first phase of the project at a festive function held at Moorkanparamba, the project site, on Sunday.
Inaugurating the construction, Antony expressed hope that the airport, once realised, would work wonders in the development front. The project will also put an end to the backwardness of the north Malabar.
“The airport will solve the backwardness of north Malabar, which remains the most backward area in the state,” the Defence Minister said. “Presently, Kerala is ready for development and once we expedite infrastructure development, it could overtake any other states in the country,” he added.
The Kannur International Airport project was a result of the combined effort of all, irrespective of party lines. If such an unanimous efforts were made in every development project, the state could really go a long way, Antony said.
CM Oommen Chandy said the director board of the KIALwould meet on Tuesday at Thiruvananthapuram to decide on the approval for the construction of the airport terminal building. The construction could begin by April or May. The PWD has been directed to develop eight roads connected to the airport.
