Rama Varma Kochaniyan Thampuran, 102, the senior-most male member (‘valiyathampuran’) of the erstwhile Cochin royal family, passed away at his son’s residence here on Wednesday.

Rama Varma Thampuran, fondly known as ‘Sixer Thampuran’ because of his keen interest in cricket, passed away early on Wednesday.

Remembered by friends and family as an avid reader, Kochaniyan Thampuran was a member of a number of libraries and a rising cricketing star in his youth. He played for Kerala at the first-class level, before he turned to a career as a financial assistant for various state government departments.

His centenary was celebrated with remarkable simplicity but with the participation by members from all walks of life two years ago. The body was kept at the Kalikotta Palace in Tripunithura for the public to pay tributes.

Rama-Varma.jpgChief Minister Oommen Chandy, Union Minister K V Thomas, Kochi Mayor Tony Chammany and Deputy Mayor B Bhadra were among the prominent personalities who condoled the death.

He is survived by wife Sharadha Varma and sons P Balagopalan, P Gokul Das, P Radhika Sankunni, and daughter P Nirmala Das. The cremation was held at Tripunithura.
